Homemade chicken schnitzels, quick & easy

I love chicken schnitzels but I am sick of buying ones from the supermarket or butchers that just don’t taste right.
So, I have made my own for the first time & I will never buy store brought ones again!

019

We had our chicken schnitzels on a homemade chicken & bacon burger & oh my, they were delicious!

020

There are 4 people that I made these burgers for & only needed 1 chicken breast.
Not only is it better to make your own but it is cheap too!

You just have to place the chicken breast in between 2 freezer bags & pound it flat with a meat mallet.

010  011

012

In a food processor, put some bread in it & blitz till it makes fine breadcrumbs.

013

Set up 3 shallow dishes.
The first one with 1/2 cup of plain flour.
The second with 2 eggs & a dash of milk whisked together.
In the last one, put a cup of breadcrumbs.

014

Cut the flattened chicken breast into 4 pieces.
Coat each piece with flour….

015

Then the egg wash….

016

And lastly the breadcrumbs (make sure you pat the breadcrumbs in so they stick)

017

Heat up some olive oil in a fry pan (about1cm high of oil).
Cook the chicken on each side for about 2 minutes.

018  019

Serve with vegies, chips, salad, or as we did, on a burger..

020

I just toasted some Turkish bread & cooked some bacon.
The burger was layered with lettuce, mayo, onion, tomato, cheese, chicken schnitzel, bbq sauce & Australian mustard.

Oh, it was delicious!

Well, I am off to get my hair cut today. It is a great start to the week, a new do!

Whatever you are up to this week, make time to do something for yourself, even if it is just a haircut or a bubble bath. Do something that makes you smile & feel happy!

Festive Friday, #4

Well, Festive Friday is here once again!
I am enjoying making a head start on Christmas projects. I should have started blogging years ago, I would be more organised!
So, I can hear you all saying,"Get to the project!!”
So I will!

How cute are these Christmas birds???
They would look so pretty nestled amongst the branches of any Christmas tree.
I had sent an email to the lovely Sandy from Wrapped in Fabric, I told her that I wanted to make some Christmas ornaments in Australian Christmas colours. I told her that I was after blues, pinks, aqua, etc & she sent me the most amazing fabric.

040

It is called
                                                            Under the Australian Sun
for Robert Kaufman

168899_197711413578700_159097754106733_825910_7301508_n

It is perfect! Just what I was after. As I have mentioned before, I find it a little strange decorating my house in winter colours & decorations when Christmas is in the middle of Summer here in Australia. This fabric is still festive but is also very Australian. I think that it suits these little birds perfectly.

So, now I will show you how I made these pretty Christmas birds

What you will need..
Fabric (1/4m makes approximately 5 birds)
5 pieces of ribbon, 15cm long
wadding or stuffing

You will need to print this bird
Project1

You can print it by right clicking on the pattern above, saving it to your documents then printing it.
The bird should measure 22 cm in total or you can make them whatever size you want.
This pattern is for personal use only, please do not use it for any business purposes.
If you use this on your own blog site, please link it back to this page.
Thank you for understanding.
Cut out the bird pattern & use it as a template. Draw around it onto the fabric.

041

Make sure that you flip it over to do the next one so that you have both sides of the bird.

044

Cut the fabric so you have 2 opposite bird pieces for every bird that you want to make.

045

Tie the pieces of ribbon like this,,,

046

Place a piece of the ribbon on top of one of the bird pieces like this…

047

Place the other half of the bird on top like this…

048

Pin all the way around the bird.

049

Sew around the edge of the bird but make sure you leave an opening about an 1 inch wide at the bottom so that you can insert the stuffing. Because this is not a large bird, you could sew this by hand or by machine.

053

Clip the curved edges, make sure not to clip the stitching.

055

Turn the bird right side out by pulling it through the opening at the bottom…..

057

Use a chopstick to reach inside the beak & tail. Be careful not to push the chopstick through the stitching.

058

Stuff the bird with wadding & use the chopstick again to push it in to all  the corners.

061

When the bird is nice & plump, hand stitch the opening closed.

062

And there you have one very pretty Christmas bird.

063

Just keep repeating until you have a whole family of pretty Christmas birds.

065

I think these are just too pretty to put away at the end of Christmas!!
These birds would also make a great Christmas gift! Package a family of them in a cute little box & you have a very thoughtful handmade Christmas gift.

Don’t forget, if you stop by

A simple but stylish, no pattern skirt

Miss Georgia LOVES skirts.
Now trust me when I say that this girl has a lot of skirts. She does wear all of them (well, not all at the same time!).
I made her this simple but stylish, high waisted skirt.

When I came across this beautiful fabric from Wrapped in Fabric

Blue_Cherries__39997_zoom

I knew that it would be perfect for a skirt.
It is

Sew Cherry Blue Cherries For Riley Blake

It is a light, soft cotton that is perfect for the Australian summer.

This skirt is really simple & easy & can be made even with the most basic of sewing experience.
If you have an elastic waisted skirt that fits the person you are making this skirt for, then you have a pattern already.
Take the skirt that you already have & place it on top of a folded piece of material.

006

I had made this “Paris” skirt for Georgia quite a while back & it still fits so it was perfect to use for the pattern.
Cut 2 rectangles (if your material is folded then you can make the 2 rectangles in one go), make the long edge the same width as the bottom of the skirt & the length is the same as the original skirt plus 3 inches.

Untitled

Georgia is a size 10 girls (Australian sizes) & I made this 46cm x 54cm.
Pin & sew up the 2 sides of the fabric.

007

Overlock or zig zag along the sewn seams & along the top.

009

Instead of just hemming this skirt, I thought it would look cute with some broderie anglaise that I had left over form another project.

009

Pin it to the bottom of the skirt & sew it.

010

Press the seam towards the top of the skirt with a medium temperature iron.

011

Sew the seam flat.

012

To make the waist…
fold the top of the skirt down 5 & 1/2 cm & iron flat. That forms the elastic casing.

014

Sew 2 lines of stitching, the first one is 2cm from the top, sew all the way around the skirt.

015

Sew the next line 1 inch (2.5cm) from the first line. Make sure to leave an opening at the back of the skirt, about 1 inch wide so that you can feed the elastic into the casing & attach a tag so you know where the back of the skirt is.

016

Feed the elastic through the casing & sew the ends of the elastic together securely.

'

017

I like to place a piece of ribbon in the back of the skirt & sew it in when closing the elastic casing. It can then act as a tag for kids to be able to easily see which way is the back & front when getting dressed.

018

Sew a line of stitching in the middle of the elastic to keep it sitting flat when being washed & worn.

019

You then have something that should look a little like this.

021

033

I added a little pleated ruffle to the front of a singlet.

034

In total, I used 1/2m of fabric for the skirt & ruffle.
I am thinking that there may be a few of these in all different colours under the Christmas tree for Georgia this year!
