After sharing this quote on the Sew, cook, laugh & live Facebook page, I was thinking that I would love to have a copy of this on my fridge to remind myself every day. You too can now have a copy too! I think sometimes that we all need reminding of this.

I thought that I would share some of the most viewed pages with you all.

Friday Flashbacks.

My week in pictures.

010

This week I made my first rag quilt! Now everytime I wash it, it will get fluffier! I have to say that it is a much easier way to quilt. This quilt is for my bed.

011

Some beautiful new fabrics & pom pom trim arrived from Fabric Traders. I can see a beautiful kaftan top & a pretty skirt just for me in these fabrics & the pom pom trim is for my next project.

004

Mr P stopped by for unexpected visit. He got to spend a 24hr break at home which is rare for during the week.

013

I got to use my new stand mixer because the oven was finally fixed.

001

First thing we made was Choc chip cookies. {recipe found here}

020

We had a serious discussion about what colour jelly beans we liked best. Just so you know for future reference, I love blue jelly beans the best!

031

I made the most awesome chicken noodle soup from my own recipe which will be on the blog next week.

032

A few new things popped up in my garden to give it some nice bright colour.

This week has been an awesome week. I came to the realisation that I am content with my life just the way it is. I am loving being a Mother to 2 beautiful, clever, funny, stubborn daughters & I am thankful to be married to an awesome, hard working husband who tells me to go & buy a new iPad when I give him those puppy dog eyes! I best be going to do some baking for when he calls in next to get some food. Can't let him know that I now waste so much time downloading new apps!

Customer service, has it disappeared?

I need to get some things off my chest. I don't often have a tantrum but today, I am.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been really disappointed in some very poor customer service. I have waited around for tradies that I have never bothered to turn up, I have had rude office staff talk to me on the phone as though I am an idiot, I have been on the receiving end of  of a checkout operators bad day & I have dealt with offshore call centres (need I say anymore). I know that so many of you have also had these problems because the response to my status updates about this subject on facebook has been overwhelming.

Why is it that some people don’t want to work anymore? Why is it that some trades have “bad eggs” who want to charge 5 times more than others in the same field? Why is it that now if a worker is having a bad day that it is OK for them to yell at customers? Why is it that some trades people just feel as though their time is more important to the customers & they either arrive late or don’t arrive at all?

Some people are complaining that there is no work but then they decide that they don’t really feel like working anyway, so they just don’t. What happened to the days when people used to work to keep bread & milk in the fridge, clothes on their back & a roof over their heads? Now, it is just easier to not try hard. It is easier to be rude to customers than to get the job done, get paid & go home. I know that I would rather do the job & do it well, get paid & get a good referral from the customer to their friends & family.
Am I missing something?

I have however had 2 exceptional customer service experiences this past week. And I don’t know if it is coincidence or not but both of the people were women. After being stood up by several male electricians, I found a female electrician who has not only turned up on time, not only took her boots off at the front door, not only cleaned up after herself but was also half the price of the male electricians. Call out fee? What call out fee? There was NONE!!! She charges only for the part & the work that she does! Did you hear that? No call out fee! Now I know there are some fantastic male tradies out there but I am here to tell you that after years of renovating, I have not found one. If you have found one, consider yourself lucky.

I then had another fantastic experience with an online fabric store. I ordered some fabric from this awesome online store, received an email to say that it had been sent & it arrived here by courier THE SAME DAY!!!! YES!!! The same day as it was dispatched!! Thank you FABRIC TRADERS! Not only did I get a discount for ordering a certain amount but I also got free postage for the order amount too!! It was all wrapped in paper with a little “Happy Crafting” sticker with an INVOICE! Yes, how many times I have I brought something online & it has turned up without an invoice.

I am on a mission to only buy a product or use a service from people or companies who have fantastic customer service. What I think that some workers/business owners don’t realise is that yes I am a woman, yes my husband earns the money but guess what……I make the financial decisions, I am the one who has to contact the repair person, I am the one who makes the final decision on who I give our family money to. Maybe instead of just thinking that I am a silly housewife, they should realise that I am the financial officer in this household. If they want my money, they are going to have to work for it. Yes, WORK for it!

While I am on my soapbox I am also going to air my disgust at self serve checkouts. I refuse to use them. My eldest daughter is nearly at an age where she will be looking for her first part time job. But the thing is that if everything is self serve, there will be NO part time jobs for teenagers. Most supermarkets now have around 8 of these self serve checkouts, that is 8 less jobs. I would rather wait 2 minutes in a line than use something that is taking away our teenage children’s ability to learn work ethics & make some income to teach them the value of a dollar. My first part time job while I was still at high school was working as a pizza maker in a local pizza shop. My second part time job was as a checkout operator. It taught me how to be responsible. How are our children supposed to become valued members of the work force if they can’t even get a part time job? I know that some of you may not have kids yet, or have babies but just stop for a minute & think of what there will be for your kids to do when they are 14 or 15 years old & want a part time job.

OK, I will step down off my soap box now.

Where are all the birds? Eating from my bird feeder!

{tutorial}

Look what I made!

PicMonkey Collage

I had a bright spark moment & came up with this pretty awesome (if I do say so myself!) bird feeder. Georgia has a keen interest in animals but I am happy with just owning 1 dog. So to encourage animals to stop by & visit, I thought I would make this bird feeder. It is really easy to make & cost under $10.

All you need is a terracotta pot, a terracotta saucer & the hanging chain for a hanging pot plant.

You just drill 3 holes into the saucer at equals spaces apart.

064

Thread your chain through the hole in the bottom of the terracotta pot & attach it to the saucer. I took 1 link off the chain & put that link under the hole. Then clip the length of chain to the link. You just need something to stop the saucer from sliding off. You could also use rope for this part & just knot it under the saucer.

076

Give it a coat of your fave colour paint & fill the saucer with bird seed!

Then just sit back & wait for the birds to come.

Scrabble tile pendants. A tutorial

Scrabble Tile Pendants are easy to make & a great way to bring some fun to your wardrobe!

copy005

These are 2 that I made for my daughters. Their friends always comment on how cute they are whenever they wear them. They are perfect to make for gifts & are very cheap to make!

All you need is

copy041

Some 1 inch square clear stickers, some good quality glue (I used E-6000), scrabble tile, some pretty scrapbook paper, a metal bail & necklace to put it on to.

Using the clear epoxy sticker, place it on the picture on the paper that you want to use.

copy042
Cut around the sticker. The epoxy sticker gives the pendant a nice finish while also protecting the paper.
Using a small amount of glue, glue the paper to the scrabble tile & allow to dry.

copy044

copy045

Using the same glue, attach the bail to the back of the scrabble tile. This gives you something to use to attach it to the chain.

copy046

    copy006

And there you have it! The options are endless to the designs that you can make these in. It is also a great way to use up those leftover pieces of scrapbooking paper that are too pretty to throw away!

Quick and easy fish parcels

copy004

Looking for an easy & quick way to cook fish? Then let me show you the way that I like to cook fish.
It is the paper parcel method. All you need is some baking paper, some mixed herbs (I used Spanish pre mixed mixed herbs in a grinder), a little butter & of course some yummy fresh fish fillets.

Sprinkle some of the herbs on to a piece of microwave safe baking paper.

001

Place your piece of fish on top. This works well with any type of fish.

002

Sprinkle some more herbs on top & also add a small teaspoon of butter.

Wrap the baking paper around the fish with all the openings folded so that no steam can escape from the parcel.

003

I cooked this fish for 3 minutes on 90% power in the microwave. (oven times & temperatures may vary)

004

And there you have it. A super moist and tasty piece of fish. Serve with steamed vegies or a salad.

Apple quickie dessert

As you probably know by now, I have been on a healthy eating plan for just over a week now. I have been doing really well, only 1 or 2 slight hiccups. The biggest thing that I am having trouble dealing with is the sweet craving after dinner. It hits really bad around 8pm. So I have been trying a few different ways to deal with this. This dessert that I came up with is super easy, super quick & super sweet. It does have just a little sugar but all things in moderation, right?

copy101

All you need is  1 apple
A 1/2 teaspoon of raw sugar
                        A sprinkle of cinnamon
                        Spray oil
                        Ice cream to serve
(this is the ingredients for 1 serving. increase by the number of people you will be serving.)

Peel & slice an apple.

092

Spray a microwave safe bowl with a little cooking oil. Not too much. Then place the apple in the bowl.

093

Sprinkle the raw sugar & cinnamon on top.

098

Cook on high for 3 minutes. (times & temperatures may vary for different microwaves)
Place the cooked apple into a serving glass & top with a scoop of your fave vanilla ice cream. (I used a light ice cream)

101

This dessert is sweet, satisfying & not too sinful!
It even passed the Mr P test which is a big deal!
