Meal planning. Do you? I want to!

I have never really thought much about meal planning, unless you count looking in the freezer every morning to decide what meat we will have for dinner that night. But, I think I would like to start. I would like to shop each week knowing exactly what we will need instead of just buying to replace things we have run out of. Dinner has always been one of my favourite times of the day.
I enjoy the whole process of deciding in the morning, preparing during the day & cooking when everyone is at home of a night time. I get excited to cook a big hearty dinner but I get just as excited to cook burgers.

I love to make the buns during the day for burgers that night.

I love to experiment with making a new sauce that is just perfect for the burgers.

But I do sometimes find myself cooking the same things on a regular basis because I am not “planning ahead”.

I have a stack of recipe books & recipe aps on my iPad but I often just cook the same meals I have been cooking for years. I think that a lot of that comes with making food that I know the kids like & will eat with no fuss. I was watching something on The View the other day (yes, I stopped being busy to have a cup of tea!) & I heard something along the lines of…

”Humans have a flight or fight response in built. If a child has not tasted a food before they are 3, they automatically will think that it is going to do them harm if they are told to eat it. We as parents need to take back control & tell our kids that it is our responsibility to make the right food choices for them. They have learnt over time that if they complain enough we will eventually give in. We as parents need to take back power & make them try new things”
{I hope I remembered it correctly}

I am taking back the power to make the food choices for my family. I know that there are certain foods that my kids just don’t like. Georgia does not like pumpkin, she will not eat it because she does not like the taste. The teenager does not like any berries, she doesn’t like the tartness of any form of berry. I won’t make them eat the foods that I know they just don’t like. But I want them to try new foods. A lot of it will still be the same ingredients but just take on a different form. They like steak & veg but will not eat stews or curries. I think it is time they tried. So I am going to start by making a meal plan that includes a couple or regular meals & a few new ones each week.

Most days I discuss on the blog Facebook page what we are having for dinner that night. So many of you join in & share what you will be serving up that night too. I love that time of the day & I often get a little jealous when I see some of your meals. I want to use those discussions as inspirations for my meal planning & maybe you might too! If you haven’t already, you can follow me on Facebook

Do you use a meal plan each week?

If you do, how do you do it?

Do you all have input or do you take control of the choices?

  1. Here's a blog post I wrote a couple of years ago about a new process I tried - and when I stuck to it, it really worked for us! I need to get back into the habit, because our eating habits suck at the moment! http://www.lifebehindthepurpledoor.com/2011/03/wellness-organised-meals.html

    1. That looks like a great idea Cate! We seem to be stuck in such a rutt so I think we need to "plan" to get out of it!

  2. No, I don't plan meals - but I sometimes think I should. I'd certainly be a lot more organised.

    1. I think it would save a lot of time to not have to run to the shops for the little things (and save money & fuel too!)

  3. I do! I do!! If I don't I feel out of control and unorganised plus I spend more money on food if I'm hitting the shops every day or so! Every now and then I fall out of schedule (like now) and it sucks!

I meal plan over a fortnight as that's what works for us as Mr Hausfrau is paid fortnightly and our kids spending time with their other parents rotates over a fortnight. When it's all working perfectly here is what I do....

At the beginning of the second week of whatever my last meal plan was (did that make sense) I start planning what we're going to have over the next 2 weeks. I take into account where the kids are, what's on on those days and any special occasions. I look through mags, cook books and iPhone apps (I love Taste.com and Clean Eating Recipes). Once the menu is written I write down everything I need to cook those meals. Then I cross off what I already have. I put all of this into Coles online but I don't finalise it yet. On the last Saturday of the fortnight I hit my local markets with my list as well as a print out of the coles online shopping trolley. I buy all my fruit and veg for the first week of my new plan as well as bulk beef and anything else I can get cheaper than Coles and cross it off my shopping trolley list.
Once I'm home I delete items from my Coles online - add anything I couldn't get at the markets and finalise my purchase to be delivered on Monday morning.
The following weekend I head to the markets again to get my fruit and veg for the second week as well as anything I've run out of like yoghurt or eggs (when my chooks aren't laying) :)

It really does make a difference to meal plan!!!

    2. You're very welcome!! It seems like a lot of work but it's really not :)
I find that when I'm writing my meal plan and I've used new found recipes I get really excited to cook them and look forward to those days! I'm in a little bit of a pickle at the moment as my oven is broken but it just means I need to get more creative with my meals and use the bbq where possible! Some weeks I resort to good ole' faithful recipes and other weeks I spend hours (well it seems like hours) trawling through books, mags, apps and websites finding new things to cook!!

  4. I used to plan - a bit like Toni, I had a 2 week menu plan.
On shopping day I wrote out the menu for the next 2 weeks on the fridge, the kids enjoyed being able to see what we were having every day.
I wrote my shopping list using my menu and I had a list of the things I normally buy, so I could check my stocks.
I did a big grocery shop one week and a veggie shop the second week and topped up on things we'd run out of.
However since we've become empty nesters, I've become more ad hoc. I'm trying now to get back to a system and also expand our menu by going through all my recipe books and picking thing I haven't tried yet. (to be blogged about sometime!)

My daughter cooks for herself and follows my planning method!

    1. I think that is fabulous that your daughter learnt it from you! I really think this is something I need to do & I wish I had started it years agao.

  5. I have tried meal planning, but it just doesn't happen for me. With just me and my hubby it isn't much of an issue anyway - I just don't do groceries until we need more milk!
Every time I hear that someone doesn't like pumpkin I think about the times I've added pureed pumpkin to my pasta sauce. I hate pumpkin, but it makes the pasta sauce delicious without any pumpkin taste. No one knows that it's in there unless I tell them!

  6. Thanks for linking up to Aussie Blogs to Love. We now have a facebook group if you're interested. I'm hoping to create a really active network, something I feel is missing in Australia. Hope to see you there!

  7. I love meal planning, it works really well for me. I create the meal plan based on what is in the fridge and freezer, what is in season, what I want to cook/eat, as well as special requests from the family! The trick for me is not locking in meals for each day, but just having a list of meals to choose from based on what I feel like cooking or eating at the time, that way it doesn't feel too 'structured' if you know what I mean, and because I have based my grocery shopping on the meal plan, I know that I have everything I need to cook each meal. Meal planning saves me money by efficient grocery shopping, and I don't end up throwing food away because it goes off before I get to cook it.

    1. This is what I do too, menu plan based on what's in the fridge freezer pantry. I do it most weeks, if I don't, I still usually have a pretty good idea of what's in there based on the previous week. I factor in when my two teens are cooking as well. That's something I've started doing since I went back to work.

Saves heaps of money, and less waste as well.

  8. I am a terrible meal planner and, just like you, fall into making similar meals over and over. I do it because I can make them with my eyes shut and the family loves them. I really should do more 'meal planning'. Rachel xx

  9. I love to menu plan. Started about 17 years ago once my first born was old enough to have the same meals as I.
These days our family is bigger and my fiance works some nights. So I write those down and plan accordingly. Oh and we shop fortnightly so I plan a fortnight in advance.
I try to make a mix of meals so we aren't having say chicken 3 nights in a row, or pasta twice too close together.
I work with what I have in my freezer, fridge and pantry and also what might be on special at the butchers and supermarket.
I try to try a new recipe each fortnight but that doesn't always happen.
I only plan our main meal at night. Breakfast is usually cereal and/or toast and lunch is leftovers or whatevers going.
I like to plan a few baking items for the fortnight too.
My menu plans can be found each week on my blog too

  10. Yep, I meal plan every week. I usually sit down on a Sunday and plan dinners for the week ahead. I take into account the kids after school activities (e.g: Tuesday's they have karate until 7pm, so dinner will be something quick and easy like quiche or bacon & egg pie that I can make in advance and whack in the microwave when they get home) then flick through recipe books, ask the kids what they'd like to eat (doesn't always mean they get what they want mind you!) and BAM! 7 days worth of meals are planned. I write the meals/recipes down on a meal planner that I bought from Kikki K (it's got a magnet on the back, so it's stuck to the fridge for easy reference) and then I write a list of what I'll need and take that when I do the groceries. I've got quite a few recipes on my blog if that's any help to you...some are my own and some are recipes I've tweaked a bit to make them more family friendly. I've found that since I've been meal planning, I'm saving a lot of time and money when doing the groceries, which means more time (and $$) to do important things like shop for shoes ;)
